FICUS CARICA commonly known as the common fig leaf, is famous for its historical symbolism of modesty, often depicted in ancient art covering Adam and Eve. Beyond its symbolic role, fig leaves are used in cooking to impart a unique flavor and have medicinal properties, traditionally used to treat ailments like diabetes, high cholesterol, and skin conditions.

Inside the “Parco archeologico delle Terme di Baia,” one little tree defies physics.

Baia was an ancient city that held a magnificent roman thermal bath.

The upside-down fig tree grows from the crumbling brick of an ancient building. The tree sprouts from the ceiling of the arch it grows inside, which was allegedly part of the Emperor Nero’s private villa. No one is quite sure how the tree ended up there or how it survived, but year after year it continues to grow downwards and bear figs.
